Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann is facing a tough battle for her reelection to Congress in Minnesota’s 6th district. Due to mandatory redistricting, the lines of her district have moved her into a more moderate area than the more conservative one she has served since 2007, so it’s not as easy a race for her as her last three elections to the seat.
Bachmann is reviled by the liberal left because of her stalwart-unapologetic conservative approach to policy and her popularity among grass-roots conservatives. Her opponent – Democrat Jim Graves has recently been moved up to top priority for funding by the DNC. Millions of dollars are pouring in from around the country to fund Graves’ effort to unseat her and the race looks to be rather close, though the most recent polling still shows Bachmann with a lead.
To make matters tougher for Bachmann, the GOP establishment has basically left her out to dry after she and four other members of Congress drafted letters calling for investigations into the infiltration by the radical Muslim Brotherhood of the U.S. government at every level including the State and Defense Departments. Senator John McCain, Speaker of the House John Beohner, and GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney are among a long list of GOP leaders who strongly condemned Bachmann for what they perceive as alarmism and McCarthyism. One of the few GOP heavy hitters to stand by her is Congressman Stave King of Iowa who is facing a very tough reelection bid of his own.
