Who is the Tim Tebow in the Presidential Primary?

Being from Florida and watching Tim Tebow play for the University of Florida I am not surprised by his performance as the quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Tim is a different kind of quarterback. He is a leader first and foremost. Tim may rewrite what it is to be a winning quarterback. Tim wins games by completing two passes. He wins through the power of his faith.

Elisabeth Meinecke, Deputy Managing Editor at Townhall.com, in her column "Miracle at Mile High" states, "I think we witnessed a miracle last night. I'm not talking about Tim Tebow's incredible 95-yard game-winning drive. I'm talking about the fact that Tebow got at least two NFL Network football analysts and stellar former players—Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin—discussing God on a post-game football show. Overall, the analysts were flabbergasted by what they saw in Tebow's performance.  They couldn't explain it."

Tim is a man of God, who lives his life in accordance with his firm religious beliefs. He is a humble man of character and piety. Tim reminds me of another leader, his name is George Washington. I recently read the seminal book about our first President by Dr. Peter Lillback titled, "George Washington's Sacred Fire". Dr. Lillback paints a picture of a man, who, faced with unprecedented challenges and circumstances, ultimately drew upon his persistent qualities of character - honesty, justice, equity, perseverance, piety, forgiveness, humility, and servant leadership, to become one of the most revered figures in world history. George Washington set the cornerstone for what would become one of the most prosperous, free nations in the history of civilization.

So who is the Tim Tebow in the Republican Presidential Primary? That is the core question Republican primary voters are trying to answer.

Who will truly lead this nation? Who has those qualities that will take us through today’s unprecedented challenges and circumstances not just using political skills but also drawing upon a higher authority for guidance? In 2008 the media portrayed Barack Obama as some sort of political messiah. Those who voted for him believed he would lead America out of the wilderness by the force of his good will. That has not happened. Why? Barack Obama is first and foremost a pragmatic politician. He has not displayed leadership; rather he has fallen into the age old trap of partisanship.

Which Republican Presidential primary candidates are virtuous? My answer is none of them. Each candidate has their own personal and political failings. However, some do exhibit big ideas and talk boldly, such as Newt Gingrich the current front runner in Iowa. The American people and the Republicans in particular, are looking for leadership based upon virtue and a belief system that embraces our founding document, the U.S. Constitution.

This political cycle, like that in 2010, is changing the old paradigms. Men not picked by the political elite such as U. S. Senator Marco Rubio, Congressman Allen West, and Florida Governor Rick Scott are now in positions of power. They are changing and challenging the political landscape. I believe the people want a person of principle not a pragmatic politician.

William F. Buckley said, “Nominate the most conservative candidate who is electable.” The Republican Party has, since the Presidency of Ronald Reagan, ignored the conservative part of the Buckley Rule in favor of the electability part. This has failed the party and given us Barak Obama. Moderates do not win elections. Men and women with big ideas and the ability to articulate them do. Look at Reagan and Obama. Both have fundamentally changed America. The question is which one is a great leader and which one is the pragmatic politician. Republicans must not nominate a Barack Obama light, also known as a "moderate Republican".

Republican primary voters will decide who is the Tim Tebow of the party. He or she may not be the perfect quarterback, but he or she can and must change the game in 2012 and fundamentally change America back to where she once was, a winner.
